About Calvary
History
On Easter Sunday, March 29, 1891, the Wyncote Mission held its first service in a small chapel that stood at the corner of Greenwood and Fernbrook Avenues. That mission was organized into Calvary Presbyterian Church on May 20, 1892. More than a century later, Calvary Presbyterian is an active church in Cheltenham Township with an expanding area of mission and outreach.
Congregation
Our congregation is a blend of older, longstanding members and young families. To meet the needs of our children, we offer excellent Sunday School and children's music programs, youth groups, and confirmation classes.
Many of our members come from religious backgrounds other than Presbyterian. They have consciously chosen Calvary because it is a community where diverse views and an open discussion of faith are accepted.
Church Government
Each Presbyterian church is governed by a group of members (elders) elected by the congregation. This is called the Session, and it meets monthly.
The Pastor serves as moderator.
Calvary is a member of the Presbyterian Church (USA) (www.pcusa.org) and the
Presbytery of Philadelphia (www.presbyphl.org). For more information, visit their websites.
We invite you to become a part of our family of faith!
